Your tap water contains all sorts of microscopic elements and, over time, mineral deposits can build up and clog the small holes in your shower head. The result is reduced water pressure and a distinctly unsatisfying shower. In some cases, a dirty showerhead can also be filled with mold, mildew, and harmful bacteria. To keep these particulates out of your bathroom and keep your shower head functioning properly, it's a good idea to clean it monthly.

How to Clean Your Showerhead:
Use a Soft Brush. If your showerhead isn't showing signs of clogging, a quick cleaning should be enough to remove any mildew or microbes. Dip a soft brush or old toothbrush in white vinegar and gently scrub in and around the holes to loosen dirt. Run water through the shower for a minute or two to rinse away vinegar and debris.
Soak the Showerhead. When you notice decreased water pressure through your showerhead, it's time to de-scale it. To clean your shower head without removing it, you'll need a rubber band, a plastic bag, and white vinegar. Fill the bag with vinegar almost to the top, then submerge the showerhead in the bag. Twist the rubber band around the top of the bag to secure it to the pipe above the showerhead. Allow to soak overnight before removing and running water through the shower to rinse. This should dissolve and particulates and allow your shower head to flow freely again.
Remove the Showerhead to Clean It. For really tough build-up, you'll need to unscrew the nut at the shower arm with pliers so you can release the showerhead. If you're concerned about the finish, wrap the nut in a washcloth first. Use a toothpick to gently push deposits and debris back up through the holes of the showerhead. Soak in vinegar overnight and rinse thoroughly.
Reattach the Showerhead. Wrap the threads with new Teflon plumber's tape and use a wrench or pliers to reattach the showerhead and nut. Test by running water to make sure you have a tight seal.
