Summer is peak season for backyard cookouts and you’ve probably put your grill to good use. Before fall begins, now’s a good time to give it a deep clean.

- A grill brush (or steel wool or foil)
- Vinegar/water mixture
- Peanut/vegetable oil
- Garden hose
How to Clean Your Outdoor Grill:
- Turn it up. For a gas grill, heat it up on high and spray peanut/vegetable oil on the grates (this loosens what’s on the grates). Let the grill get hot with the lid closed for about half an hour (maybe less if you have little dirt to clean, but the longer you wait, the easier it’ll be to clean).
If you have a charcoal grill, empty the bottom of the grill completely of any ash and then empty out the ashtray.
- Soak. Turn off your gas grill completely, disconnect it from any propane tanks, and wait until it’s completely cooled down. Then remove the grates completely and soak them in the vinegar/water mixture for at least ten minutes .
- The little details matter. Clean any and all of the smaller parts of your grill, such as the burner tubes and drip pan, with soap and water.
- Scrubadubdub. Before you get to your grates, use your grill brush to scrub the inner hood along with the inner walls and bottom of the grill. Then wipe it down with your sponge.
- Get to the grates. The grates should be easy to easier to clean after soaking, so give them a good scrub before wiping them down with the sponge and drying them off.
- Make it shine. After you put everything back, spray down the outside of the grill with your hose to wash off any accumulated dust or debris and then dry with a towel.
Using your grill properly each time will give it a longer lifespan. Follow these tips whenever you’re cooking.
- Be patient. Before using your grill, always make sure it preheats completely.
- Get a clean start. Before adding any food, use a brush to remove any residue off the cooking grates.
- Turn up the heat. Once you’re done using your grill and have removed the last bit of food, turn the heat up to the highest setting. This will burn off all the grease and drippings.
- Keep it covered. Once it’s cooled down, always cover your grill.
